GWOC 2017 (2)

Though fall break meant relaxation and maybe a weekend getaway for many at Centerville, the Cross Country Teams were busy this weekend with the first leg of their arduous journey to the State Championships.  What a successful first leg it was for both the girls and boys teams!  The weather was unseasonably warm for mid-October and the sun shone bright on Centerville Stadium as the Elks once again hosted the GWOC Cross Country Championship races right here in our own back yard!

The Centerville varsity girls took to the course first with something to prove, in search of the GWOC Overall Championship title that eluded them last year.  The girls raced with purpose and determination on a course that was tougher, muddier and hotter than usual, but the conditions were no match for the girls as they sailed across the finish line not only as GWOC National East Champs, but as GWOC Overall Champs as well!

Junior Grace Kilroy gutted it out on the course to a strong finishing time of 18:23, yielding her a 4th place finish for GWOC National and a 5th place GWOC Overall finish.  She was followed by freshman Emma Bucher with a finishing time of 18:43, good for a 7th place GWOC National finish and an 8th place GWOC Overall, an incredible feat for such a young runner!  Finishing times and GWOC National places for the entire pack of seven runners were as follows:

Grace Kilroy 18:23 (7th)

Emma Bucher 18:43 (8th)

Rachel Whitehead 19:06 (9th)

Kerri Walsh 19:12 (10th)

Kelli Walsh 19:35 (13th)

Savannah Lowe 19:56 (17th)

Sidney Khosla 20:20 (23rd)

Displaying their depth as a team, Centerville secured a strong second place finish in the GWOC Girls Open Race on Saturday with freshman Nikki Jindal leading the entire pack across the line in an impressive first place finish.  All five scoring Centerville runners found themselves among the top 12 runners across the line overall. Finishing times and GWOC National places for CGXC in the Open Girls race were as follows:

Nikki Jindal 20:46 (1st)

Katie Jauch 21:00 (5th)

Megan Kafka 21:21 (9th)

Megan Knauer 21:24 (11th)

Maddie Little 21:30 (12th)

Claire Maxwell 21:49 (21st)

Hannah Mangen 22:03 (24th)

A HUGE shout out to the Centerville Boys Cross Country team, who also finished GWOC National Division and GWOC Overall Champions, and to Ben Burkett with his outstanding 1st place GWOC Overall finish!

Centerville Girls Cross Country takes the stage once again next week as they compete in the Ohio Southwest District Division I Championships in Cedarville, OH.  The Road to State has most certainly begun for these talented athletes!  Let’s go, CGXC!  #BeTheChange
