Girls Soccer Cruises in Tourney Opener

2017 VGSOC

The third seeded varsity girls soccer team opened up sectional tourney play last night at home by hosting 16th seeded Stebbins at Alumni Stadium.  The girls were looking to put an end to a two-game losing streak as the official “second season” got underway.

The girls had several scoring chances right away, but a couple of nice saves by the Indians’ goalie, a shot off the post, another off the crossbar and one that went just wide kept this game scoreless for nearly the first ten minutes.  That all changed when Sidney Kemp headed in another shot that glanced off the crossbar to give her team a 1-0 lead with just over 31 minutes left in the first half.  That opened up the flood gates over the next several minutes and the Elks took full advantage.  With just over 28 minutes left in the first half, Chloe Spitler made it 2-0.  Exactly two minutes later, Elizabeth Anderson scored to put the Elks on top, 3-0.  Just over two minutes later, Spitler added her second goal of the nights and the Elks were in cruise control with a 4-0 lead.  Emily Whitehead added one more goal just 48 seconds before the break and as the two teams headed to the locker room, the Elks were in control, 5-0.  About midway through the second half, Allison Ormsby scored to make it 6-0.  A few minutes later, she scored again to increase the lead to 7-0.  Jessie Pulaski and Grace Nation rounded out the scoring for the night as the Elks won, 9-0, to advance to the second round where they will face the Wayne Warriors on Thursday night at 7PM at Alumni Stadium.
