The varsity boys basketball team claimed the District Championship on Saturday night at UD Arena with a 67-62 victory over Cincinnati Elder.
Centerville came out of the gate hot as senior Mitch Balser buried a couple of early three pointers and led the Panthers, 13-8, at the end of the first quarter. The Elks stretched their lead to 25-14 late in the second quarter before Elder closed the half on a 7-0 run to make it a 25-21 Centerville lead heading into the locker room. The team came out of the locker room determined and put on a show in the third quarter. A pair of three pointers by Senior Kyle Dodson along with a nice move by Senior Clayton Schmerber and some clutch play from Senior Joey Weingartner helped the Elks outscore Elder 24-11 in the third quarter to take a commanding 49-32 lead into the final eight minutes. Elder made a valiant comeback attempt in the final quarter by scoring 30 points, but the Elks made enough plays down the stretch to secure their place in the Sweet 16 with a 5-point win.
Balser (19), Weingartner (17) and Dodson (13) all reached double figures for the Elks.
The win vaults the now 23-3 Elks into the Division I Sweet 16 where they will face a familiar foe, the 22-4 Wayne Warriors, on Wednesday night at 8:00 PM at the Cintas Center on the campus of Xavier University. Centerville and Wayne split their regular season games with each winning on their own home floor. The stakes are much higher in this game with the winner earning a spot in the Elite 8 and a chance to advance to Columbus for next weekend’s State Final Four.
Presale tickets are $7 and can be purchased in the Athletic Office from 7:30 AM – 4:30 PM today, tomorrow and Wednesday. All tickets at the door on Wednesday night are $8. There is no charge for parking at the Cintas Center.
