The varsity softball team opened 2015 tourney play under threatening skies last night at CHS. The Talawanda Braves were in town to challenge the fifth seeded Elks and quickly fell behind 1-0 in the first inning. After a scoreless second by both teams, the Elks tacked on an additional 5 runs, 3 coming on a bases clearing double by freshman Amanda Ross, to take a 6-0 lead after three innings. Talwanda scored in the 4th to trim it to 6-1, but the Elks answered in the bottom half to make it 7-1. After two more runs in the fifth made it 9-1, the two teams were sent to their shelters for a 30-minute lightning delay. Following the delay, the Braves were put down in order and the Elks quickly scored twice more to finish the game in run-rule fashion, 11-1.
Junior pitcher Mollie Paulick battled the elements all night to record a no-hitter as the Elks advanced to the second round where they will face Sidney tomorrow night at 5:00 at CHS.
