The 245 Scholar Athletes from the 2014-2015 school year were recognized at the annual Scholar Athlete Award Ceremony which was held on Sunday, May 17th in the Performing Arts Center at Centerville High School. The group included 105 first year junior award winners, 42 first year senior award winners and 98 second year senior award winners. To qualify for Scholar Athlete, a boy or girl must be a junior or senior, earned a varsity letter during the current school year and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher.
During the ceremony, several special awards were given out as well.
Members of the All-GWOC Academic team (top 10 senior boys and girls based on their gpa) were announced. The boys’ team members were John Tsatalis (4.84, cross country), Tanner Daskalakis (4.51, tennis), Ronald Knapp (4.24, golf), Ayush Peddireddi (4.23,tennis), Davin Fish (4.11, cross country), Scott Robbins (4.09, basketball), Akshar Kathula (4.08, tennis), Joshua Turich (4.06, golf), Matt Stoner (4.05, baseball) and Scott Garrison (4.04, football). The girls’ team members were Heather Wang (4.84, tennis), Andrea Liberman (4.74, Coeds), Alexa Jennings (4.67, cross country and track), Abigail Hecht (4.63, cross country and track), Kathleen Fillingim (4.59, swimming), Lindsey Weisman (4.59, cross country and track), Maria Gardner (4.49, soccer), Clare Coons (4.46, cross country and track), Lauren Moran (4.35, soccer) and Sabrina Grandhi (4.34, lacrosse).
Senior diver Katie Polk, the 2015 State Champion, was recognized by the United States Marine Corps as their Distinguished Athlete Award Winner.
Senior football and basketball player Kevin Smith and senior basketball player Shannon Coffee were recognized by the United States Army as the US Army Reserve Scholar Athlete Award winners.
Senior football and baseball player Blake Zeller was recognized with the OHSAA Courageous Student Award after undergoing Tommy John Surgery last summer and returning to earn second team all-GWOC Central honors for baseball this spring.
Varsity girls bowling coach Lindsey Coulles was awarded the OHSAA State Award for Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity.
Senior diver Noah Hickey and senior soccer player Maria Gardner were recognized with the NFHS Award of Excellence.
Senior soccer, hockey and lacrosse player Grant Slagle and senior Cross Country and Track runner Alexa Jennings were named as winners of the OHSAA Scholar Athlete Award.
Senior basketball player Joey Weingartner and senior cross country and track runner Kelsey Kohls were named winners of the Terry Wieland Character Award.
Senior track athlete Grant Harmon and senior tennis player Emily Sewall received the OHSAA Archie Griffin Award for Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity.
Senior tennis players Tanner Daskalakis and Heather Wang were honored as the 2014-2015 Centerville High School Scholar Athletes of the Year.
Wang then joined senior boys volleyball player Benjamin Horwath as the first winners of the newly founded $1,000 JSS scholarship from the family of last year’s Female Scholar Athlete of the Year, Anu Vajapeyajula.
Senior basketball player and scholar athlete Kyle Dodson was awarded a scholarship from the Joey Sharpe Foundation. The Sharpe family was in attendance and were gracious enough to award a fellow Elk this scholarship on behalf of their son Joey who past away in a tragic accident in Kettering in 2007.
Congratulations to all of these outstanding young mena nd women and their families on these amazing accomplishments. You have left a legacy at Centerville High School which will be very hard to match and one of which you should be very proud.
