The varsity softball team scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to stun host Northmont, 2-1, in a GWOC Central showdown Monday night. Both teams entered Monday’s game with identical 6-0 records in the GWOC Central and the Thunderbolts were riding a 10-game winning streak.
Northmont struck first in the bottom of the third to take a 1-0 lead which would stand through the first six innings. Things looked bleak for the Elks who had managed only two hits through the first six innings. With their backs firmly pressed against the wall, the girls rose to the occasion and scored two runs on three hits to take the lead and then slammed the door on defense in the bottom of the seventh to pick up a huge win. Olivia Ferrazza scored on a huge RBI by Raquel Emery to tie the game and then Emery scored what proved to be the game winner on a huge RBI by Lizzie Leach.
Now 11-1 on the year and 7-0 in GWOC Central play, the Elks host Northmont tonight at 5PM at home. If they are able to pick up a win, they will clinch at least a tie for the GWOC Central championship.
The JV team lost a hard fought, 8-7, game at home last night to Northmont and travels to Clayton for a rematch today at 5PM.
