The varsity softball team traveled to Mason on Wednesday night to take on the fourth ranked Comets as both teams prepared for their District Final games on Saturday. The Comets came in to the game with a 23-1 record and the #1 seeds in the Cincinnati sectional. The Elks did not flinch at the challenge and handed Mason only their second loss of the season, 3-1.
Mason struck first in the bottom of the second as they scored a run off of a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead. The Elks answered right back in the top of the third as they got a sacrifice fly themselves to tie the game up, 1-1. Neither team scored in the fourth and then senior pitcher Mollie Paulick launched a two-run homer to straight away center field in the top of the fifth to give the Elks a 3-1 lead. From there, she slammed the door on the mound and the Elks came away with a big victory.
Now 19-5 on the year, the Elks return to action on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 when they travel to Northmont High School to take on Lakota West at 3:00 PM for the District Championship. A win would be the first district title for Centerville since 2004.
