The varsity boys basketball team will return to a very familiar place next Saturday as they make their third consecutive trip to the District Finals after cruising past rival Wayne tonight, 74-58, in the Sectional Finals at Vandalia Butler. The Elks will play the winner of tomorrow night’s game between Lakota East and Mason next Saturday at UD Arena at a time to be announced.
The game was tight in the first quarter as the Elks led, 11-8, after the first eight minutes. The second quarter saw both teams continue to play each other evenly and the Elks took a 33-30 lead to the locker room. In the third quarter, the Elks started to pull away from Wayne and led, 43-35 with 1:22 left. A quick, 6-0 burst to end the quarter gave the Elks a commanding 49-35 lead with just one quarter left to play. Sensing the opportunity to put the game away, the Elks opened the fourth quarter on a 14-7 run to take a 63-42 lead with just over four minutes left. From there, they put it on cruise control and posted a 74-58 win to advance to the District Finals.
Senior Keegan Saben led all scorers tonight with 25. He was joined in double figures by senior Sam Lash with 14 and juniors Alec Grandin and Donnie Shelton with 13 and 10. With the win, the Elks are now 17-8 on the year.
