The boys lacrosse team tried to start their season Monday night at Alumni Stadium against visiting Lebanon, but Mother Nature had other ideas. A strong thunderstorm forced the JV game to be cancelled and the varsity teams to wait to make a decision as they watched the weather radar. After the storm passed, the teams decided to play and the game started at 7:05. The first quarter was a tight contest and the Elks held a slim, 4-3 lead after the first 12 minutes. In the second quarter, the Elks expanded their lead to two and took an 8-6 lead to the locker room. Unfortunately, the lightning returned at that point and forced the rest of the game to be cancelled, giving the Elks a weather-shortened, 8-6, season-opening victory.
Last night at Alumni Stadium, the Elks welcomed the visiting Miamisburg Vikings. It was a very cold, but dry night as the JV team opened their season with a convincing, 9-0 victory. The varsity then took the field to try to build on their first win. The visiting Vikings scored first, but the Elks responded with two quick goals to tak a 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Elks jumped on the Vikings with two quick goals and ended up shutting them out to take a 6-1 lead to the locker room. The teams played an even third quarter with Miamisburg gaining momentum with two late goals, but the Elks still led 10-5 as the teams headed to the fourth quarter. In that final quarter, the Elks salted the game away and hung a 14-7 setback on the visitors.
Now 2-0 on the year, the team hits the road for the first time on Saturday when they travel to Lakota East High School to take on the Thunderhawks in an early morning contest. The JV game gets underway at 9:00 AM and will be followed by the varsity at 11:00 AM.
