The varsity softball team traveled to West Chester last night to take on the Lakota West Firebirds in the second round of the OHSAA state tournament. The third seeded Firebirds have been a thorn in the Elks’ side during recent years and last night proved to be no different.
The girls drew first blood by scoring a run in the top of the first inning to take a brief, 1-0 lead. The Firebirds answered in their half with a two-run home run to take a 2-1 lead after one inning. The Elks tied it back up in the top of the third when they pushed across another run, but the Firebirds took the lead for good with a three spot in the bottom of the inning. They expanded that lead in the bottom of the fourth with two more runs and then rode their pitching and defense the rest of the way for a 7-2 victory to advance to the sectional finals next Monday.
The Elks end their season with an 11-14 record and a GWOC NL East championship.
We would like to wish this year’s seniors the best of luck in the future and thank them for their dedication to the program over the years.
