The varsity boys soccer team hosted the St. Xavier Bombers on Saturday morning at Alumni Stadium. The team could not have picked a worse day to turn in their most lackluster performance of the year and paid a big price for doing so. The majority of the first half was played in the Centerville end and the Bombers finally scored with about 4 minutes left to take a 1-0 lead. That lead would hold up as the two teams headed to their respective locker rooms for halftime. In the second half, the Elks just missed their best scoring opportunity of the day and then watched the floodgates open. About halfway through, the Bombers scored twice in less than a minute to effectively put the game on ice. The final score of 4-0 was very indicative of the effort the team put forth on the day and definitely got the attention of the boys headed into tomorrow night’s huge game against Beavercreek and then the state tournament which begins next Tuesday.
In the first game of the day, the JV A team used a late goal from Cody Potgieter to win a battle of unbeaten teams, 1-0. Their record is now 14-0-0. While the A game was going on at Alumni, the B team was playing the Bombers at Oak Grove Park. It was another great game, but the Bombers were able to eek out a 2-1 win.
Now 10-2-3 on the year, the Elks return to action tomorrow night when they welcome Beavercreek to Alumni Stadium for 5:30 (JV A) and 7:15 (varsity) matches. If the Elks win, they will be the NL East Champs. If the Beavers win or tie, they will win the East.
