The varsity girls soccer team played their final home game of the 2017 season last night at Alumni Stadium as they welcomed the #1 ranked Division II team in the state, the Alter Knights, for Senior Night. Prior to the start of the game, the Elks recognized their senior players and trainers along with their parents and family on the field.
Once the game got underway, the Lady Elks knew they had their work cut out for them on this night. Not only were they facing the current top-ranked team in the state in Division II, but they were also facing a team who is the defending Division II State Champions. They were also riding a 23-game unbeaten streak as they came to Alumni Stadium. The first half was a defensive struggle as the two teams battled to a 0-0 tie after the first forty minutes. The majority of the second half was played much the same way until junior Alexis Hutchison stunned the visitors with a goal to give the Elks a 1-0 lead with about seven minutes left in the game. Unfortunately for the Elks, the Knights responded about three minutes later to tie the game at 1. That is how the game would end as the huge crowd left wanting to see more of these two outstanding teams going head-to-head.
In the opening game of the night, the JV A team beat the Knights 4-0 to remain unbeaten on the year with a 14-0-1 record.
Now 8-3-4 on the year, the Elks hit the field one last time in regular season play when they travel to Beavercreek High School tomorrow night to play for the National League East title. If the girls win the game, they will share the title with Beavercreek. If the Beavers win or tie, they win the title outright. The JV A game gets underway at 5:30 PM and will be followed by the varsity at approximately 7:15.
