Centerville Girls Cross Country stole this show this past Saturday afternoon at National Raceway in Hebron, OH as they captured their record-tying fourth straight State Championship!
The win was not easily earned as Cincinnati Ursuline Academy gave the Elks all they could handle, but the Lady Elks outdistanced the Lions by a score of 122-137, aided by an outstanding last mile of racing by the entire team.
Leading the way this year was fearless freshman Emma Bucher, who eked ahead four spots in her last mile to finish 12th overall with a PR time of 18:16. Junior Grace Kilroy raced across the finish line next in 18th place with a commanding time of 18:25. Sophomore Kerri Walsh picked up 4 places in the last mile as well, sailing across the line in 22nd place with a PR time of 18:28. With their efforts, all three earned the honor of All-Ohio and a spot on the wall at Centerville High School!
Next in for the Elks was junior Rachel Whitehead with a strong race performance, good for 44th place with a time of 19:00 flat. Senior Kelli Walsh, who picked up a staggering 16 places in her last mile, helped capture the title for the Elks with a 71st place finish with a time of 19:28. Invaluable team members served to aid the Elks’ depth on Saturday were junior Savannah Lowe (84th, 19:43) and sophomore Dalia Einstein (94th, 19:51).
A special shout out to Kelli Walsh for being only the third runner in Ohio high school history to finish as a member of a team State Champion all four years of her running career! What an astonishing accomplishment!
The entire team of nearly 70 CGXC runners were on hand to cheer on their teammates to victory and, appropriately, the entire team took the podium together to celebrate an incredible season of running.
Congratulations to this talented team of athletes, to the coaching staff past and present, to the parents, and to all alumni who were a part of this afternoon and of this season of triumph for CGXC! #EPND
