The varsity boys basketball team traveled to Southern State Community College in Hillsboro on Saturday to compete in the Ohio Valley Coaches Classic at the Patriot Center. Their opponent was Fairland High School from Proctorville, Ohio down by the Kentucky and West Virginia borders.
The Elks got off to a slow start and went 0-4 at the free throw line in the first quarter as they trailed the Dragons, 9-5. The two teams exchanged baskets in the second quarter and the Elks pulled a point closer, but still trailed at the break, 22-18. In the third quarter, the Elks fell behind by eight and then pulled within three and had the ball, but could not score. Fairland took advantage of that lapse and built their lead to six points, 34-28, after three quarters of play. In the fourth quarter, the Dragons put together the game’s first and only scoring run to pull away from the Elks and coast down the stretch to a 50-35 win.
Now 0-1 on the year, the Elks are back in action on Friday night when they travel to Springboro High School to take on the Panthers. The freshman gold game gets underway at 4:30 PM and will be followed by the JV game at 6:00 PM and the varsity at approximately 7:30 PM.
