The varsity girls basketball team welcomed the Springboro Panthers to Centerville High School tonight for a GWOC crossover game. Unfortunately for the Lady Elks, they could never find any offensive rhythm and fell to the Panthers, 52-29. Springboro jumped out in front early and held a nine-point lead, 15-6, at the end of the first quarter. They continued to pad their lead in the second quarter and headed to the locker room with a commanding, 24-12 lead. In the third quarter, the Lady Elks could muster only three points and found themselves in a 19-point hole after three quarters of play, 34-15. In the fourth quarter, the Lady Elks finally showed signs of life and put a little pressure on the Panthers who quickly recovered and closed out the game with another impressive run. Leading scorers for the Lady Elks tonight were Jasmine Broner with nine. Amy Velasco and Sam Chable added seven.
In the first game of the night, the Panthers won the freshman game, 40-30. That was followed by the JV game which was won by the Lady Elks, 63-52.
Now 2-2 on the year, the girls are back in action on Saturday night when they make the short trip up Far Hills Avenue to Trent Arena to take on the Fairmont Firebirds. The freshman game gets underway at 4:30 and will be followed by the JV at 6:00 and the varsity at approximately 7:30.
