The varsity hockey team hosted the Talawanda Braves on Friday night at South Metro Ice Rink in the opening round of the SWOHSHL tournament.
In the opening period, Drew Schemmel scored for the Elks and the teams were tied at 1 after fifteen minutes of play with the Braves getting the better of the shot total, 9-4. In the second period, the Braves outshot the Elks 14-6 and outscored them, 2-0, to take a 3-1 lead heading to the last 15 minutes. In the third and final period, the Elks fired off 11 shots to the Braves’ eight, but only outscored them, 2-1, to drop a hard-fought, 4-3 decision. Drew Schemmel and Griffin Bechtolt scored the third period goals for the Elks.
Now 15-15-2 on the year, the boys are back in action on Friday night when they travel to the Ohio Health Chiller North in Columbus to face off against St. Francis DeSales in the first round of the OHSAA tournament. Opening face-off is set for 8:30 PM.
