The varsity boys basketball team welcomed the Fairmont Firebirds to CHS on Friday night for what turned out to be a very tense, National League East match-up. The Elks were looking to rebound from a tough loss to Miamisburg at home on Tuesday night.
In the first quarter, the Elks started quick and played their traditional lock down defense to race out to a 10-4 lead. They really turned the heat up in the second quarter by outscoring the visiting Firebirds, 22-11, to take a commanding, 32-15 lead to the locker room. To their credit, the Firebirds did not fold and came out of the locker room determined to get back in the game. They did just that by outscoring the Elks, 20-11, in the third quarter to cut their deficit to just eight points, 43-35, heading to the final eight minutes of play. In that last eight minutes, the Firebirds continued to inch their way back into the game and it was not until a three pointer bounced off the rim as time expired that the Elks could exhale by hanging on for a 54-51 victory.
Donovan Shelton and Davis Mumaw led the Elks with nine points each. Jason Sneed and Alec Grandin each contributed eight while Matthew Pearce added seven to round out a balanced scoring attack for the Elks.
In the opening game of the night, the freshman black team rallied from a huge deficit only to see the visitors score the final four points of the game to escape with a 47-46 win. That was followed by the JV game which was won by the Elks, 45-32.
Now 12-8 on the year, the Elks are back in action tomorrow night when they welcome the Beavercreek Beavers to CHS for Senior Night. The freshman gold team gets underway at 4:30 PM and will be followed by the JV at 6:00 and the varsity at approximately 7:30. The Senior Night ceremony honoring 19 Coeds, Athletic Training Student Aides, cheerleaders and basketball players will begin immediately after the JV game.
