Elks News · Boys Lacrosse Falls to Lakota West in the Battle for the Paddle

The varsity boys lacrosse team hosted the Lakota West Firebirds last night at Alumni Stadium in the annual “Battle for the Paddle” game on Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night.  Between the JV and varsity game, every lacrosse player walked out onto the field with a teacher or staff member whom they credited for making a difference in their lives.  We had Primary Village North, the middle schools, the high school and others recognized.

As the game got underway, the Firebirds struck quick and jumped out to a 2-0 lead.  The Elks got their feet underneath them and scored to cut the deficit to one only to see the Firebirds respond with a late goal to lead 3-1 at the end of the first quarter of play.  The Elks struck first in the second quarter to pull within 3-2 only to see the Firebirds answer with a pair of goals to go up by three, 5-2.  Following two goals by the Elks, the Firebirds answered with three of their own to lead 8-4.  The Elks kept fighting to the final buzzer and scored with just 2.4 seconds left before halftime to pull within 8-5 as the teams headed to their respective locker rooms.  The third quarter belonged to the Elks as they scored four of the first five goals to knot the score at nine.  The Firebirds responded with two goals to go back in front, 11-9, but the Elks answered with two seeing-eye goals in the final minute of the quarter to knot the score at 11 with just 12 minutes left in the game.  Unfortunately for the Elks, the Firebirds had all the answers in the final quarter and pitched a shutout to win the game, 14-11, and hold onto the paddle for another year.  In the opening game of thew night, the JV team continued their strong start to the season by cruising to a 14-1 win.

Now 4-5 on the year, the Elks are off tonight before back-to-back road games to wrap up a busy week.  Tomorrow night, they head south to Cincinnati to take on the Loveland Tigers.  The JV game gets underway at 5:30 and will be followed by the varsity at approximately 7:15.  On Saturday, the team heads northeast to Columbus to battle Olentangy Orange.  The JV game gets underway at 1:00 PM and will be followed by the varsity at approximately 3:00 PM.
