The varsity softball team traveled to Miamisburg High School last night to face the Springfield Wildcats in a rubber match of their season series with a berth in the District Finals on the line.
Junior Anna Samborsky pitched for the Elks and set the ‘Cats down in order in the top of the first. In the bottom of the first, the Elks loaded the bases with nobody out, but were unable to score and the game headed to the second inning in a scoreless tie. In the top of the second inning, the Wildcats scored on a hit-by-pitch and a two-out throwing error to take a 1-0 lead. The Elks answered right back in the bottom of the second when Samborsky helped herself with a huge two-run single as the Elks led, 2-1, heading to the third. Neither team scored in the third and the game stayed 2-1 heading to the fourth inning. The Elks escaped a jam in the top of the fourth and then scored a big run on a two-out passed ball in the bottom half to take a 3-1 lead heading to the fifth. The Wildcats threatened in the top of the fifth, but third baseman Anna Marie Demos knocked down a line drive and tagged out the runner coming from second to end the threat. In the bottom of the fifth, the Elks loaded the bases with nobody out for the second time in the game. This time, however, they cashed in big. Three hits, a bases loaded walk and a wild pitch plated six runs and the Elks took a commanding, 9-1 lead to the sixth inning. In the sixth, both teams went down in order and the Elks found themselves three outs from a District championship game. With two outs and two on, the Elks got a little sloppy defensively and committed two errors to allow two unearned runs before getting the third and final out in a 9-3 win.
Now 10-12 on the year, the Elks advance to the District finals on Saturday where they will face the fifth ranked Mason Comets at either Lakota East or Northmont High School. A game time will be announced later today.
