The varsity softball team won back-to-back tournament games to land in the District finals as the #13 seed. They knew they would have their work cut out for them with fifth ranked, perennial power Mason standing in their way. After two days of weather delays, the game finally took place last night at Northmont HS.
After going down in order in the top of the first, the Elks walked the Mason lead-off hitter. She promptly stole second, advance to third on a ground out and scored on another ground out to give the Comets a 1-0 lead after one inning of play. The Elks got a hit from sophomore Carly Westendorf in the second, but were unable to get her any farther. Mason’s first baseman led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run to right center field and the Comets led, 2-0, after two innings. The Elks got a two-out walk in the third, but could not advance the runner and the Comets manufactured another run in the bottom of the third to lead, 3-0. Neither team scored in the fourth and then Mason blew the game open in the bottom of the fifth to lead, 6-0. From there, they turned to their pitching and defense to bring the Elks magical tourney run to a screeching halt with a 6-0 win.
The girls finish the year with a 10-13 record. Thank you to seniors Anna Marie Demos and Carrie Mires for all they have given to the program the past four years. Best of luck to both of you in the future.
