The 2017-2018 season of Athletics at CHS was an incredible overall year for Centerville Athletics. I recently received a letter in the mail that kind of put the year in proper perspective for me. The Director’s Cup is an award given at the collegiate level to the top performing schools based on a scoring system that awards points for each team that competes collegiately based on their overall performance. Gregory Dayton, who resides in Pickerington, OH implemented this same type of scoring system to evaluate the performance of all the high school sports programs in the state of Ohio to unofficially rank all the schools in Ohio. He sent the top performing schools a letter congratulating us on our performances.
He compiled a set of rankings for girls only sports, boys only sports, and an overall ranking for both the girls and boys sports combined. He used the same scoring method that is used for the Director’s Cup. Using the OHSAA State Championship events and tournaments for each individual team sport, he assigned the appropriate point values to each school based on their performance. The better the performance for each school in the State Championship Event or Tournament, the higher the point value earned.
For the girls only rankings Centerville was #1 in the rankings out of 597 high schools who earned points. For the boys only ranking the Elks were #5 out of the 650 schools that earned points. In the combined rankings the 2017-2018 Centerville Elks were #2 in the entire state of Ohio, finishing just 24.5 points behind Powell Olentangy Liberty and 133.5 points ahead of #3 Mason.
I am so proud of our coaches and athletes. These kinds of accomplshments do not happen without all of the hard-work, dedication and commitment needed to perform at this level. I understand that this type of metric is what many use to determine the success of athletic programs but I am here to tell you that this accomplishent is really just a by-product of the quality programs that we have here in Centerville due in large part to the great coaches we have, the great kids we have, and the great support we get from this community. That partnership is what makes Centerville so special. This is a place that still understands that excellence comes with a price and that price is what will make you successful in life as you move on from CHS and that is ultimately what education based athletics is all about. Well done Elks!
