Varsity/Reserve Girls Cross Country · Centerville Girls Cross Country Captures First in Kentucky

The entire Centerville Girls Cross Country team took to the road this past weekend to compete for the
second time in the oldest cross country meet in Kentucky: the 63rd Annual Trinity Valkyrie Invitational in Louisville.  While the word of the day last week was ‘mud’, the word this week was ‘heat’!  Scorching, blazing Kentucky heat!  “By the time the seeded girls took the course at 11 a.m., the temperature had reached 89 degrees and the heat index hovered around 103.” (Courier Journal)

But CGXC bared down and battled Mother Nature and the competition once again and squeezed out a trip to the top of the podium for the second year in a row.  Centerville slid by Indiana’s West Lafayette Red Devils to capture the seeded title by just three razor-thin points with a score of 76.  The runners from Beavercreek were close on the heels of our Lady Elks, finishing a very close fourth with a team total of 87, setting the stage for exciting races to come this season.  Centerville was led once again by sophomore Emma Bucher who crossed the line with an outstanding second place finish overall:

Emma Bucher, 18:08 (2nd)
Grace Kilroy, 18:39 (6th)
Kerri Walsh, 19:48 (21st)
Savannah Lowe, 20:16 (29th)
Rachel Whitehead, 20:17 (30th)
Nikki Jindal, 21:00 (45th)

Earlier in the morning, with a temperature and heat index no less oppressive, the remainder of the CGXC Varsity runners ran a solid early morning race against a strong field and finished as follows:

Maddie Little, 21:21 (33rd)
Alex Jackson, 22:07 (64th)
Kalie Adrian, 22:10 (67th)
Emma O’Brien, 22:29 (75th)
Claire Maxwell, 22:44 (82nd)
Caitlyn Cunningham, 22:49 (83rd)
Leah Vanbeysterveldt, 22:50 (85th)

By mid-day, the heat was so stifling that race officials, concerned for the safety of the runners, cancelled the Open Race. The remainder of the CGXC team handled the disappointing news that they wouldn’t be racing with grace and poise.  Each runner left Kentucky inspired for the upcoming week and ready to take on the most anticipated event of the season–Saturday Night Lights!  This coming Saturday, Centerville Stadium will be overflowing with the top runners from the Midwest in an event whose energy and excitement can only be explained by being experienced!  Don’t miss your chance to cheer on your Lady Elk runners right here in our own backyard this Saturday Night!  #CrossTheThreshold
