The varsity girls soccer team wrapped up the regular season last night by welcoming the unbeaten, untied, third ranked Beavercreek Beavers to Alumni Stadium. The Lady Elks knew a win would give them a share of the GWOC East title and any other result would give the outright title to the visiting Beavers.
Unfortunately for the Elks, the Beavers were not in a sharing mood last night. Following two spectacular saves by goalie Michelle Huelsman, the Beavers cashed in with their next opportunity off of a beautiful cross in the box to take a 1-0 lead with 27 minutes left in the first half. Five minutes later, the visitors scored again as the Elks defense had trouble clearing the ball and suddenly found themselves in a 2-0 hole with 22 minutes left in the half. That would be the score as the two teams headed to their respective locker rooms to make halftime adjustments. The second half, played for the most part in a steady rain, saw the Elks control the possession for the majority of the first twenty minutes. Unfortunately, the Beavers always had an answer defensively and continued to frustrate the Elks who could not muster any shots on goal. Then, with about 18 minutes left in the second half, the Beavers seized an opportunity in the open field and quickly advanced the ball into the Elks end. A couple of nice passes later, a perfectly placed shot into the right corner increased the lead to 3-0. From there, the defense took over and continually cleared any threat the Elks tried to muster. As the clock ran out, the Beavers celebrated not only a perfect season, but also an outright league title.
In the first game of the night, the JV A team beat Beavercreek, 3-0, to finish the year with a 14-0-2 record.
Now 12-2-2 on the year, the girls now turn their attention to the postseason. Up first is a visit from the Wayne Warriors on Tuesday night. That game is scheduled for 7:00 PM at Alumni Stadium. As a reminder, now that postseason play has begun, all tickets are $7 and no passes are accepted.
