The boys varsity basketball team started the 2018-2019 season tonight by hosting the Springboro Panthers in a key GWOC showdown at Centerville High School. Both teams were hoping to get off to a great start to their season in what has become a fantastic, local rivalry.

In the second quarter, the Elks started on a 9-0 run to take their first lead of the night, but the Panthers responded and rebuilt their lead to ten. As the teams headed to their respective locker rooms at halftime, the Panthers held a seven point lead, 31-24.
Early in the third quarter, the Panthers stretched their lead to double digits again before the Elks went on a run to end the quarter. As the game headed to the final eight minutes, the Elks led, 40-39.
In the fourth quarter, the teams went back and forth in the first few minutes before the Elks slowly started to pull away and earn a hard-fought, 53-46, win to start the season.
Leading the Elks in scoring tonight were Matthew Pearce with 17, Jason Sneed with 10 and Ryan Marchal with 8.
In the first game of the night, the freshman black team fell to the Panthers, 72-23. In the middle game, the Elks JV team beat the Panthers, 65-52.
