Many wondered how the Lady Elks basketball team would respond on Saturday against Trotwood after recording a huge home win on Wednesday night over Fairmont. Many thought and, quite frankly, expected there to be a letdown coming off such an emotional win. An undefeated Rams team is certainly not the team to play if you are suffering a letdown.
A school record-setting 34-point first quarter made it perfectly clear there would be no letdown as this group was laser focused. Their pressure defense and unselfish play on both ends of the court was the catalyst to a 34-8 lead after just eight minutes of play. The second quarter saw much of the same as the Elks outscored the Rams, 21-11, to take a 36-point lead, 55-19, to the locker room. In the third quarter, the Elks outscored the Rams, 20-9 to lead, 75-28, after three quarters of play. They closed the game by winning the fourth quarter as well, 13-6, to post an 88-34 win.
Once again, the Elks had a balanced scoring attack. Every player who dressed for the game scored and five reached double figures, led by sophomore Amy Velasco’s 17. Joining Amy in double figures were senior Sam Chable with 16, junior Gabby Rittinger with 12, freshman Cotie McMahon with 11 and senior Kelsey George with 10.
In the first game of the night, the JV team defeated the rams, 62-17.
Now 4-0 overall and 2-0 in NL East play, the girls are back in action on Wednesday night when they travel to Springfield High School to take on the Wildcats. The JV game tips off at 6:00 and will be followed by the varsity at 7:30.
