The girls varsity basketball team made the trip to Hammond, Indiana yesterday to begin a four-day stay in the 2018 Hoops 4 Pink Tourney not far from Chicago, Illinois. Their first opponent was Gary West Side Leadership Academy out of Gary, Indiana. Like many other teams this year, the young ladies from Gary had no answer for the relentless defensive pressure applied by the Lady Elks.
In the first quarter, the girls used that defense to race to a nine-point lead, 17-8, heading into the second quarter. That would be as close as this game would be all night. In the second quarter, the girls extended their lead to 14, 29-15, as the two teams headed to their respective locker rooms at halftime. The second half was all lady Elks, especially the third quarter. The girls started the second half by outscoring Gary West Side, 18-7, in the third quarter to take a 25-point lead, 47-22, to the final eight minutes of play. In that final quarter, the girls once again outscored their opponents, 11-5, to post a convincing, 58-27, win.
Seniors Alexis Hutchison and Sam Chable led the Elks in scoring with 10 and 9, respectively as all but two players scored in another total team effort.
Now 8-0 overall and 5-0 in NL East play, the girls are right back at it tonight at 7:30 as they face off against Morgan Park High School out of Chicago, Illinois. Meanwhile, back here at home the freshman and JV teams are in action this afternoon. First off is the freshman team, who will try to match the varsity and stay unbeaten when they welcome Minster to CHS for a 2:00 PM tip-off. That will be followed by the JV team, who welcomes Springboro for a 3:30 tip-off. The Lady Panthers are the only team to beat the Elks so far this year and they did that in overtime at Springboro about a month ago.
