The varsity wrestling team traveled to Trent Arena last night to take on the Fairmont Firebirds in the annual “Battle of Far Hills.” The Elks were looking to reclaim the trophy the Firebirds won last year and bring it back to Centerville, but the Firebirds had other ideas.
The Firebirds jumped out to a quick 19-0 lead by winning at the 182, 195, 220, 285 and 106 pound weight classes and never looked back in cruising to a 37-19 win to keep the trophy for the second year in a row. The Elks made it interesting with forfeits at the 113 and 120 pound weight classes followed by their first win of the night by Damion Ryan at 126 to close the gap to 19-17. That was as close as it would get as the host Firebirds won matches at the 132 and 138 pound weight classes along with the Elks losing a point for misconduct to make the score 28-16 heading down the stretch. Avery Bair won his match at 145 to pull the Elks within nine at 28-19, but they would not get any closer as the Firebirds won the last two matches at 152 and 170 to complete the win and keep the trophy in Kettering for another year. Senior wrestler Drew Wiechers lost his first match of the season in the final match of the night at the 170 pound weight class to cap an otherwise forgettable night for the Elks.
The boys have little time to recover as they are right back in action tomorrow and Saturday at the Perrysburg Invitational Tournament at Perrysburg High School. Wrestling gets underway at 3:30 Friday afternoon and then again at 9:30 Saturday morning.
