The varsity hockey team hosted Thomas Worthington High School on Friday at South Metro as they celebrated Staff Appreciation Night. Prior to the game, the players welcomed the teacher or staff member who they felt had had the greatest impact on them towards their education.
Once the game got underway, the visiting Cardinals struck first with a late first period goal to take a 1-0 lead after the first fifteen minutes of action. In the second period, Riley Hrin tied the game at a goal apiece, but the Cardinals retook the lead late in the second period to take a 2-1 lead heading to the third period. In the third period, the Elks had a chance to tie the game with an early power play, but were unable to do so. The Cardinals, however, did strike on the power play later in the period and then added an insurance goal to claim a 4-1 victory.
Now 10-11 overall and 5-4 in league play, the Elks are back in action this weekend as they host their annual MLK tournament at South Metro. They will play once on Friday, twice on Saturday and once on Sunday. Those times and opponents have not yet been announced.
