The magical season the girls basketball team has enjoyed thus far got even better last night as the team traveled to Beavercreek High School and beat the Beavers, 54-37, to clinch the outright Eastern Division Title for this season. The win was also the 300th of Coach Adam Priefer’s career, with 285 of those coming here at Centerville.
In the first quarter, the Lady Elks came out sharp and focused and jumped to an eight-point lead, 16-8, after eight minutes of play. They turned up the pressure in the second quarter and outscored the Beavers, 14-9, to take a 13-point lead, 30-17, to the locker room at halftime. The Beavers made some fantastic adjustments at halftime and outscored the Elks, 18-12, in the third quarter to close the gap to just seven points, 42-35, heading to the final quarter of play. Sensing the league title was within their grasp, the girls ratcheted up the defensive pressure and held the Beavers to just two points in the fourth quarter to secure the win and celebrate the league title. The win was also the 300th in the illustrious career of Head Coach Adam Priefer, with 285 of those wins coming here at Centerville.
Freshman Cotie McMahon led all scorers with 20 points and was joined in double figures by sophomore Amy Velasco with 13 and senior Alexis Hutchison with 10.
In the first game of the night, the freshman team remained unbeaten with a hard fought, 41-36, win. Izzy Laidly scored 22 to lead the way. In the middle game of the night, the JV team fell to the Beavers, 41-33.
Now 20-1 on the year and 11-0 in GWOC East play, the girls play their final regular season game of the year Saturday night at Wayne High School against a very talented Warriors squad. The JV game tips at 6:00 and the varsity at 7:30 as the #2 state ranked Lady Elks will look to complete a perfect league record.
