The varsity boys volleyball team welcomed the Northmont Thunderbolts to CHS last night still looking for that elusive first win of the season. The boys were confident coming into the game and have not had their spirit broken despite the rough start to the season.
The first set went back and forth most of the way. With the Thunderbolts holding a 22-20 lead, the Elks were hoping for a late push. Unfortunately, the visiting T’bolts had other ideas and scored the final three points of the set to grab a 25-20 win and take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five match. Undeterred by this setback, the Elks built a big lead in the second set, faltered a little down the stretch, but finally put their visitors away with a 25-19 win to tie the match at one set apiece. The third set was all Northmont after a 10-10 start as the ‘Bolts cruised to a 25-14 win and a 2-1 lead in the match. The fourth set is the one the Elks will be replaying over and over in their minds as one they probably let get away. They had five set points to force a fifth and deciding set, but could not get that last point they needed. Northmont finally took advantage of this opening and posted a 30-28 win to take the match, 3-1.
In the first match of the night, the JV A team cruised to a 2-0 win by the scores of 25-10 and 25-17.
Now 0-5 on the year, the Elks will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Huber Heights to take on the Wayne Warriors. The JV A game gets underway at 5:30 and will be followed by the varsity at approximately 6:45.
Tomorrow, both the JV A and JV B teams will compete in the Elks JV Invitational here at CHS. Action in that 16-team tournament will get underway at 8:30 AM.
