The boys varsity volleyball team hosted their annual CHS Varsity Elite tournament on Saturday featuring seven of the best teams from around the state. Since the Elks have struggled so far this season, they were given the #8 seed in the tournament which meant they had to face the #1 seed in the quarterfinals.
This was not just any #1 seed either. It was Hilliard Darby, the #1 ranked team in the state. Darby came out strong early and flexed their muscle to win the first set, 25-11. The Elks bounced back and had an 18-12 lead in the second set only to see Darby come storming back to win 25-20. The visitors from the Columbus suburbs then closed out the match with a 25-18 win in the third set.
In the consolation bracket semifinals, the Elks then had to face Lakota East. The Thunderhawks had just dropped a five-set heartbreaker to Elder. This was their second loss of the season to Elder who has been the only team to beat them so far this season. That made for an angry team who dispatched the Elks in straight sets, 25-8, 25-23 and 25-11.
That led to the Elks falling into the seventh place game against Cleveland St. Ignatius. The Wildcats were looking for their first win of the day as were the Elks, but the Wildcats would end up coming out on top in a close, hard-fought match. The first set was won by St. Ignatius, 25-17, and the second set was also won by the Wildcats, 25-19. Facing a day of being shutout from winning a single set, the Elks rebounded to win the third set, 25-22. The fourth set went back-and-forth before a service error at match point lifted the Wildcats to a 25-23 win and a 3-1 victory in the match.
Now 4-13 on the year, the boys are right back in action tonight when they host the Fairmont Firebirds here at CHS. The JV game gets underway at 5:30 PM and the varsity will follow at approximately 6:45 PM.
