The varsity boys volleyball team welcomed the Fairmont Firebirds to CHS for a rematch last night. The Elks were looking for revenge after falling at Fairmont earlier in the season, 3-0. A large, vocal crowd greeted both teams as these two rivals renewed their hostilities.
The visiting Firebirds came out swinging in the first set and rolled past the host Elks, 25-13, sending a strong message to the hosts that they had come to play and were intent on sweeping again. The second set was much more competitive, but a late run by Fairmont lifted the visitors to a 25-21 win and a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five match. After trading points in the third set at the beginning, the Elks fell behind 12-8 and called a timeout. They responded out of the timeout with an 8-0 run to take a 16-12 lead. After Fairmont scored, the Elks closed the set on a 9-2 run to win, 25-15, and pull within 2-1. The Elks came out strong in the fourth set, but could not maintain their momentum. A big run by the Firebirds gave them a commanding lead. The Elks made a run, but could not recover and lost set four, 25-19, to drop the match, 3-1.
In the opening match of the night, the JV A team also fell to the Firebirds, 2-0.
Now 4-14 on the year, the boys are back in action tomorrow night when they travel to Beavercreek High School to take on the Beavers. JV B gets things started at 5:00, JV A follows at 6:00 and varsity wraps up the night at approximately 7:15.
