The boys lacrosse teams at Centerville and Lakota West High Schools staged their annual “Battle for the Paddle” game on Friday night at Lakota West High School. This is always an emotional game, but this year that emotion was taken to an even higher level as the Firebirds celebrated their Senior Night prior to the game.
Once all the pregame festivities had wrapped up, the teams got down to business. The Elks came in as the state’s 15th ranked team while the Firebirds came in 22nd. The two teams played about as even a first half as possible. At the end of the first quarter, the teams were deadlocked in a 4-4 tie. At the half, the two teams remained in a deadlock at 6-6. The Elks had a banner third quarter, outscoring the Firebirds, 3-1, to take a 9-7 lead with just twelve minutes left. Unfortunately, for the Elks, the Firebirds returned the favor in the fourth quarter and outscored the Elks 4-1 to win a thriller, 11-10, and retain the paddle for another year.
In the opening game of the night, the JV team also fell to Lakota West, 6-4.
