The boys varsity gold tennis team hosted the OHSAA Sectional Tournament here at Centerville High School last Friday and Saturday. The top four finishers in both singles and doubles would punch their ticket to this week’s District Finals at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.
In the singles competition, sophomore Will Owen faced Temur Nazarov of Springboro in the second round and cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win to advance to the third round. Facing Junior Tuscano from Middletown, Will wasted no time and rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win. Knowing a win in his next match would secure a berth in the District Finals this week, Owen again cruised to an easy win, this time 6-1, 6-1 over Evan Doughman from Lebanon. Already a District qualifier, Owen was now looking for a Sectional Championship as well. Unfortunately, Austin Staiger from Beavercreek derailed those plans with a convincing, 6-4, 6-1 win which dropped Owen to the third place match. Rather than hang his head, Will decided to come out fighting and won that third place match, 6-1, 6-2 over Vincent Lyons from Springboro. Junior Rishi Appalaneni dropped his first match to Staiger, 6-2, 6-2 to wrap up a fantastic season while senior Shravan Kalahasty won his first match, 6-1, 6-3 over Henry Mascall of Lebanon before bowing out in the the second round to Heidi Orloff from Beavercreek, 6-1, 6-0.
In the doubles competition, junior Tairan Zhang and senior Brandon Rowland won their first round match against Jack Buhman and Noah Lehmann from Carroll, 6-3, 6-3. In the second round, they defeated Jonathan Fender and Caleb Reed from Wilmington, 6-3, 6-2. In the quarterfinals, they would square off with Matt and Josh Satter from Springboro. Knowing a win would punch their ticket to the District Finals, the boys came up just short as they suffered a season-ending loss, 7-5, 4-6, 2-6. On the other side of the bracket, senior Dhruv Gollamudi and sophomore Ryan Peters earned a bye in the first round. In round two, they defeated Daniel Hebert and Michael Goubeaux from Carroll, 6-0, 6-1, to advance to the quarterfinals. Knowing a win in this match would secure a berth in the District Finals, the boys came out and defeated Noah McGillvary and Nick Mitchell from Springboro, 6-4, 1-6, 6-0 to secure their spot. Not wanting to settle for just being District qualifier, the boys also had their sights set on a Sectional Championship. Unfortunately, those plans were derailed by Alex Sie and Zach Savinno from Beavercreek in a thriller, 7-5, 3-6, 3-6. Much like Owen in singles, the boys refused to hang their heads and came out swinging in the third place match, beating the Satter brothers from Springboro, 6-3, 6-1.
Will (singles) and Dhruv and Ryan (doubles) will play next on Thursday morning at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason at the OHSAA District Championships. Action gets underway Thursday morning at 9:00 AM.
