In what has already been a challenging season for the boys volleyball team, the road did not get any easier on Friday night when they traveled to Kettering to face perennial Division II state power Archbishop Alter, who came into the match ranked third in the state. The Knights showed why they earned that ranking in sweeping the Elks, 3-0, by the scores of 25-10, 25-23 and 25-14. In the opening match of the night, the JV B team defeated the Knights, 25-17, 25-16. In the middle match, the JV A team also fell to Alter in straight sets, 25-10, 25-11.
On Saturday, the JV A team traveled to Hilliard Davidson High School to participate in the Davidson JV Invite. In their first match against Reynoldsburg, the Elks rolled to a 25-17, 25-14 win to advance to the semifinals. In that semifinal match, the Elks squared off with the Pickerington North Panthers. Like they had done in their first match, the boys won in straight sets, 25-23, 25-22. In the championship match, the Elks found themselves matched up with Worthington Kilbourne. In the first set, the Elks made it 5-0 on the day with a thrilling, 27-25 win. Needing just one more set to come home with the championship trophy, the Elks stumbled for the first time on the day, 25-20. Tied at a set apiece, the two teams knew the winner of the next set would be crowned tournament champions. The two teams again went back and forth, but in the end, the Wolves outlasted the Elks, 25-21.
Now 4-17 on the year, the team has a busy week ahead of them. They play three matches in three nights and the first one of those is tomorrow night when they travel to #7 Elder to take on the Panthers. The JV A and JV B games get underway at 5:30 PM and will be followed by the varsity at approximately 6:45 PM.
