The varsity boys volleyball team closed out a frustrating regular season on Thursday night with a straight set win on the road at Lakota West. The boys are hoping this win will propel them on a nice winning streak as they head into tourney play this week.
The Elks came out of the gates strong and won the first set, 25-18. Knowing the Firebirds would be looking to bounce back and even the match at a set apiece, the Elks refused to let that happen and rolled to a 25-16 win and a 2-0 lead in the best of five match. Sensing the opportunity to put the match away and head home, the Elks did not let that opportunity slip by and posted another, 25-16, win to take the match, 3-0. In the first match of the night, the JV A team also won in straight sets, 25-11 and 25-15. They finish the year at 10-13.
On Saturday, the JV B team traveled to Massillon Jackson to try to defend their title from last year at The Polar Bear Invitational. They got off to a great start by winning their first match over Brecksville-Broadview Heights, 25-8 and 25-9. They then turned their attention to Lakewood St. Edward. They dropped the first set, 25-19, but rallied to win sets two and three by identical 25-16 scores to take the match, 2-1. In the finals, they faced Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit and the two teams staged a match worthy of a championship. Unfortunately for the Elks, they could not get a big point when they needed it most and lost a heartbreaking match, 28-26 and 26-24. The JV B team finishes the year at 9-11.
The Elks conclude the regular season with a 5-19 record and now turn their focus squarely on the OHSBVA Regional Tournament which begins tomorrow night at Middletown High School. In their first match, the Elks face a familiar foe in the Fairmont Firebirds. Action at MHS gets underway at 5:00 PM.
