The varsity boys soccer team took their seven game winning streak to Wade Field last night to battle the Springboro Panthers. Both teams came into the game with hopes of winning their respective division titles. The Panthers sat alone in first place, one and a half games ahead of Lebanon and Northmont, while the Elks entered in second place, one game behind unbeaten Beavercreek. The Elks knew they had to win to stay in the race with a game looming against Beavercreek next week.
The Panthers wasted little time in getting on the board as they scored less than three minutes in to take a 1-0 lead. The Elks responded when Aleks Thomas headed in a perfectly placed long ball from Mark Balonier with 20:56 left in the first half to tie the game at 1-1. That would be the score as the two teams headed to their respective locker rooms to make halftime adjustments.
In the second half, the only goal came about nine minutes into the half. Unfortunately for the Elks, it was a Panther header off a corner kick for a 2-1 lead. The defense would hold up the rest of the night for the host Panthers as they snapped the Elks winning streak with a 2-1 victory.
In the first game of the night, the JV A team edged Springboro, 3-2. Meanwhile, the JV B team traveled to Oak Hills and handed the Highlanders a 9-0 defeat.
Now 8-5-1 overall and 5-2 in league play, the Elks are back in action on Saturday night when they travel to Cincinnati to take on St. Xavier. JV A and JV B get underway at 5:00 PM and varsity follows at 7:00 PM.
