The varsity girls volleyball team made the long trip up I-75 to Toledo on Saturday to take on the St. Ursula Academy Arrows. SUA came into the game ranked fourth in the state poll and the Elks carried a 12-game winning streak so something had to give.
In the first set, the host Arrows came out on fire and could do no wrong, jumping to an 8-0 lead out of the gate. The Elks settled themselves down, but could not get close enough the rest of the set to seriously threaten and fell, 25-17. The second set went back-and-forth before the Arrows finished strong to take a 2-0 lead with a 25-20 win. The Elks controlled the third set and held a 2-3 point lead for most of it until faltering at the very end and falling, 25-21, to drop the match, 3-0. In the first match of the day, the freshman team won, 2-0. That was followed by the JV match which was won by SUA, 2-0.
Now 16-4 on the year, the girls are back in action tomorrow night when they welcome Fairmont to CHS for Senior Night. The freshman game gets underway at 4:30, the JV game at 5:30 and the varsity game at approximately 6:45.
