Varsity Girls Soccer · Girls Soccer “Breezes” Into District Finals

Playing in a steady wind and pouring rain for most of the night, the girls varsity soccer team faced Sidney in an OHSAA District Semifinal last night at Miamisburg High School.  Both teams were looking to advance to Thursday’s District Final at Lakota West which would make them one of the last 32 teams playing in the state of Ohio.

Playing the first half with a very strong wind at their back, the girls dominated the action as Sidney could rarely get the ball across midfield thanks to the Elk defense and the wind.  The Elks repeatedly fired shots toward the goalkeeper who made several nice saves and was aided by the wind sailing the ball wide or over the net on several other occasions early in the game.  The Elks finally broke through when Braelin Devoe launched a shot from  about 30 yards out that sailed over the outstretched hands of the goalkeeper and settled into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead with 24:12 left in the first half.  About three minutes later, Rachel Root launched a shot from about 20 yards out on the opposite side of the field.  The result, however, was the same and the Elks now led, 2-0, with 21:17 left in the first half.  The remainder of the half saw the Elks continue to pepper the goal and keep the pressure on, but could not get one into the net.  As time expired and the two teams headed to their respective sidelines to prepare for the second half, the Elks held a 2-0 lead.

Early in the second half the Lady Elks, now going against the wind, continued to press the action.  Senior Chloe Spitler made an absolutely perfect pass to the center where fellow senior Emma Stanley put the ball in the back of the net to stretch the lead to 3-0 with 31:17 left in the game.  The Elks had some more opportunities to score and finally did when Spitler, who worked hard all night and had many narrow misses, ripped a shot past the Jackets goalie to extend the Elks lead to 4-0 with 10:57 left in the game.  The defense took over from there and the clock ran out on a 4-0 victory for the Lady Elks.

Now 14-3-1 on the year, the girls advance to the District Finals on Thursday night where they will face the Loveland Tigers in a 7:00 PM showdown at Lakota West High School.  Loveland advanced by eliminating Mason, 1-0.
