Last night at West Carrollton High School, the varsity boys soccer team faced the Northmont Thunderbolts in a District Semifinal match. This was a rematch of an early season game at Northmont which was won by the Thunderbolts, 5-0. The Elks were looking for a little payback and were trying to extend their season. They accomplished both feats!
Playing with a strong wind at their backs in the first half, the Elks wasted little time in drawing first blood when Thomas Maley scored just six minutes into the game to give the Elks a 1-0 lead. A little over eleven minutes later, Matt Fahrenkamp scored with 22:35 left in the first half to stretch the Elks lead to 2-0. That score would hold as the clock ran out and both teams headed to their respective locker rooms at halftime.
Going against the wind in the second half, the Elks were hoping to build on their momentum and keep the Thunderbolts at bay. Seven and one half minutes into the second half, Fahrenkamp made sure that would happen by adding his second goal of the night to increase the lead to 3-0. From there, the defense took over and kept the Thunderbolts from scoring the rest of the game. As the clock hit triple zeros at the end of the second half, the Elks were celebrating a 3-0 victory which propelled them into the District Finals as one of the last 32 teams still playing in the State of Ohio.
Now 11-7-1 on the year, the boys will travel to Lakota West High School on Saturday night to take on the Elder Panthers. Game time is set for 7:00 PM.
