The varsity girls basketball team traveled to Lakota West High School on Saturday afternoon to take on Newark in their season opener at the Journey to the Tourney. The girls were hoping to get off to a great start and knew they would be tested by a big, talented Wildcats team.
The first eight minutes were intense and well played by both teams. The Wildcats held a four-point lead after the first quarter, 18-14. The Elks made a push in the second quarter and closed the gap to two, 31-29, as the two teams headed to their respective locker rooms to make halftime adjustments. The third quarter was the downfall for the Lady Elks as the Wildcats found their range and lit it up from three-point land to take a 12-point lead, 53-41, to the final quarter. The LAdy Elks tried to get back in the game, but the Wildcats did everything they had to do to hold them off and earned a hard-fought, 71-63, win. Junior Amy Velasco led the Elks with 27 and freshman Kendal George added ten as the only two players in double figures.
In the earlier games of the day, the freshman team defeated Mount Notre Dame, 19-14, and the JV team defeated Mercy-McAuley, 38-24.
Now 0-1 on the year, the girls are back in action on Friday when they travel to New Albany High School to take on the Eagles. The freshman game tips at 3:00, the JV at 4:30 and the varsity at 6:00.
