Varsity Girls Basketball · Lady Elks Shake Off Slow Start to Beat Fairborn in Tourney Opener

The varsity girls basketball team traveled to Troy High School on Saturday morning to officially start the “second season” by facing Fairborn in their Sectional tournament opener.  The girls were hoping to get off to a great start and play determined and focused basketball.  Unfortunately, that was not the case.

In the first quarter, the Elks and Skyhawks traded punches and when the buzzer sounded, the third seeded Elks had just a five-point lead, 16-11.  With about three minutes left in the first half, the lead was still only five as Fairborn continued to hang around.  The Elks closed with a flurry to win the quarter, 21-12, and take a 14-point lead, 37-23, into the locker room at halftime.  The girls came out of the locker room laser focused and blew the game wide open with a dominant, 27-7, third quarter.  That stretched the lead to 34, 64-30, as the game headed to the fourth and final quarter.  Over the last eight minutes, the girls outscored the Skyhawks, 10-8, to post a 36-point win, 74-38.

Leading the way for the Lady Elks were sensational sophomore Cotie McMahon, who scored 28, and fantastic freshman Kendal George, who added 13.

Now 15-8 overall, the girls advance to the second round where they will face off with the Franklin Wildcats.  That game will tip at 6:00 PM at Troy High School on Thursday night, February 20.
