The boys and girls bowling teams began the 2020 state tournament trail last week when they competed in the Sectional tournament at Poelking South. Both teams were hoping to finish in the top ten which would advance them to the District Finals and put them on the doorstep of the state tournament.
On Wednesday, the boys got first crack at continuing their season and took full advantage of their opportunity by finishing sixth overall with a total score of 3,904. The Elks were led by Anthony Conty, who had a 600 series. Ian Dobran added a 585 and Brendan Salo a 583 as the Elks punched their ticket to the District finals on Thursday.
On Thursday, the girls tried to match the boys by extending their season as well. Through the three team qualifying games, the girls sat in tenth place, just six pins above the cut line, which obviously put them in a very precarious position. They responded to the pressure well and rolled a 1,014 through the six Baker games, including a 214 and a 189 game, to rise to an eighth place finish and join the boys team by advancing to the District Finals this week.
The two teams flip flop days this week as the girls will bowl on Wednesday and the boys on Thursday in the District Finals. Both events will get underway at 9:00 AM at Beaver-Vu.
Good luck to both teams as they try to earn a trip to the state championship next weekend in Columbus by finishing in the top five.
