The varsity wrestling team hosted the OHSAA Sectional tourney this past weekend here at CHS. The tournament was supposed to take place on Friday and Saturday, but a water main break overnight Friday forced day two to be postponed until Sunday. All of the wrestlers and coaches were tremendous with their understanding and flexibility and the tournament was a huge success.
The Elks had two fantastic days of wrestling. The team finished second overall and six individuals qualified for the District Finals. Simon Taylor (106), Damion Ryan (113) and Luke Acuna (120) all won their weight classes. Jonathan Bruder (220) lost a hard-fought championship match, 5-2, and settled for runner-up. Avery Bair (152) dropped a tough, 5-3, decision in the semifinals and then bounced back with an 11-2 major decision to finish third and Gunnar Pool (182) won his first match, dropped his second and then won two straight to earn his way into the third place match. He ran out of gas in that match and dropped a 9-3 decision to finish fourth overall. Jamison Gilmore (138) dropped his first match in heartbreaking fashion, 4-3. Following a bye, he won his second match by fall at 0:19 and his third match by fall at 3:39. Needing one more win to qualify for Districts and earn a spot in the third place match, he dropped his fourth match by fall at 0:36. Undeterred by this setback, he bounced back with a 9-2 decision to finish fifth overall and be the alternate for Districts. If, for any reason, one of the top four finishers in his weight class is unable to wrestle this weekend, Jamison would take their place and be the next man up.
Those wrestlers moving on to Districts will compete this weekend at Trent Arena on both Friday and Saturday looking to punch their ticket to the state tournament next weekend in Columbus. Wrestling on Friday gets underway at 4:00 PM and continues on Saturday at 10:00 AM.
Good luck, boys!
