Elks News · Varsity Football Drops Game To Wayne In Last Seconds


The varsity football team built a 23-14 lead heading into the 4th quarter at home Friday vs. Wayne but could not sustain the lead and squandered numerous opportunities to put the game away and then allowed Wayne to go 98 yards to win the game with 14 seconds remaining 28-23.

The Warriors strike first with a 54 yard TD run to go up 7-0 with 4:20 left in 1st quarter. The Elks answered with a 29 yard TD strike from Chase Harrison to Cam Smith to tie it up 7=7 with 1:01 left in 1st quarter. Harrison connects with Matt Mercer for a 14 yard TD pass with 7:07 left in the second quarter and the fake PAT was no good and the Elks lead 13-7. The Warriors answered with a 4 yard TD run with 3:57 left in the 2nd quarter to take a 14-13 lead. The Elks drove right  down the field and Couville nailed a 26 yard FG as time expired in the 2nd quarter to give the Elks 16-14 halftime lead.

The Elks opened the second half with a great drive but penalties stalled the drive and the teams traded possessions. The Elks put together a beautiful 83 yard TD drive capped off with a 8 yard TD pass from Harrison to Mercer. Elks lead 23-14 with 3:32 left in the 3rd quarter. The offense could not get over the penalty hump for the rest of the game and the defense could not stop the Warriors and the Elks fall to Wayne 28-23.

The JV team beat Wayne 35-7 and the Freshmen beat Wayne 16-7.

The varsity team is now 1-2 overall on the season and travels to Springboro this Friday September 18th for a 7:00 pm kickoff. Tickets go on sale beginning Tuesday September 15th, 2 tickets per family.
