Elks News · Boys Basketball Claims 1st Regional Title In School History


The varsity boys basketball team faced Moeller on Saturday night in the Regional Final at Princeton High School. It was the 3rd straight year these two teams have squared off at the Regional Tourney and Moeller had won the first two encounters. Saturday night proved to be different as the Elks played an incredible basketball game against a very talented Moeller squad and came away with a 40-38 win to put the Elks in the State Tournament for the first time in school history.

The game was arguably the best high school game played this season. Filled with great defense, timely shooting and the intensity of a Super Bowl. The Elks led at the end of quarter one 11-9 and led at the half 18-17. The third quarter set the tone for what was to come in this game. Moeller would inch ahead and the Elks would answer. At the end of the 3rd quarter the Elks trailed 28-30. Rich Rolf his a big three with 4:40 to tie the game at 34-34. Moeller led 36-34 with 2:08 left and had the ball but the Elks got a stop. With 1:35 left Gabe Cupps hit a huge 3 to put the Elks up 37-36, but Moeller answered with a bucket to take the lead back at 38-37. Elks had the ball with :48 seconds left. The Elks moved the ball around looking for a great shot. Cupps hit House with a touch pass and Tom House let loose of a deep three that fond nothing but net to give the Elks a 40-38 lead with :02 left. The Elks made a great defensive play and held on to win 40-38. The win was the 14th in a row for the 24-3 Elks who were led by Rich Rolf with 14 points, Tom House with 12 points and Gabe Cupps with 12 points.

The Elks will now play 25-0 Mentor on Saturday at 5:00 PM at UD Arena.
