Elks News · Boys Basketball Knock Off Westerville Central To Capture First Basketball State Title In School History


The varsity boys basketball program traveled to UD Arena to take on a very talented and well coached Westerville Central team for the D-I State Championship. The Elks did what they have done all year, they persevered and trusted each other and everyone performed their roles to the best of their ability and as a team were able to bring home the State Title with a 43-42 win over Westerville Central.

The Elks led 15-11 at the end of the 1st quarter and 22-18 at the half behind 10 points from sophomore Gabe Cupps. The third quarter was an absolute battle with both teams competing at an extremely high level and the Elks led heading into the 4th quarter 34-31. Central scored the first 8 points of the 4th quarter to take a 39-34 lead over the Elks with 5:36 to play in the game. Coming out of a timeout Junior Tom House scored 4 straight points to cut the lead to 39-38 and then Cupps created a defensive jump ball that gave the Elks the ball with 3:35 left. After a media timeout the Elks executed a great play and junior Rich Rolf scored at the rim to give the Elks a 40-39 lead with 3:09 left in the game. The Elks never trailed again as junior Quinn Hafner hit a huge 3 pointer with under 2:00 minutes left for q 43-39 lead. Central hit a 3 with 44 seconds left to make it 43-42 Elks. The final 44 seconds saw great defense and a tension filled finish as Central missed a heavily defended 3 point shot at the buzzer to seal the win!

Gabe Cupps had 16 points, Tom House 9 points and Rich Rolf 9 points to lead the Elks offensively. The elks end the season at 26-3 overall on arguable the toughest schedule in the state! So proud of these boys and coaches!
